Weekly preparation of medication in the reusable medication dispenser

Organising medication in the nursing home

Managing and organising medication is one of the most important and demanding tasks for registered nurses in a care home. Partly for reasons of time and staffing, it is common practice to prepare residents’ medication on a weekly basis. To make organising medication in the nursing home easier, there are functional reusable dispensers, cups and trays.

Reusable medication dispensers for a better overview

The melipul reusable medication dispenser is made of robust, high-quality plastic and is available in white or blue. While the white version features four-colour labelling, the blue model has the advantage that nurses can see white tablets in it more easily.

The reusable medication dispenser can be reprocessed in a professional or domestic dishwasher, ideally in the matching melipul stainless steel dispenser washing basket. The medication dispenser is available in the following three versions:

  • with 4 compartments
  • with 5 compartments
  • with 8 compartments

The first model has four extra-large compartments, designed for morning, midday, evening and night-time medication. The five-compartment dispenser also features a small additional compartment for medication that has to be taken on an empty stomach. This model is particularly popular in nursing homes.

The eight-compartment dispenser is suitable for antiarrhythmic medication or for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Antiarrhythmic drugs are able to terminate atrial fibrillation and cardiac arrhythmias, thereby restoring a normal heart rhythm. The nurse records the individual time of administration with a pen. There is currently no other alternative to this product on the market.

How medication management for a whole week works

The nurse places seven dispensers in the dispenser box provided, with the day of the week written on each lid. The result is the melipul XL medication organiser, which, in line with the number of compartments, is available in 4-, 5- and 8-compartment versions. The organisers are stored in the nursing home’s medication room or in the medicine cabinet on the ward.

Once a day, the nurse takes out a dispenser and places it on the dispensing tray for distribution. After distribution, the empty and thoroughly cleaned dispenser is put back in at the top, ready to be refilled for the following week.

The nurse responsible for preparing the medication each week strictly follows the 6 R or 10 R rule (the “rights” of medication administration). This means meticulously ensuring that the right medication is given to the right person in the right dose, by the right route and at the right time, while also taking the duration of use into account. Correct storage and responsible risk management are also important. Documentation and disposal likewise fall within the nurse’s area of responsibility.

An attractive selection of trays

Various trays are available for dispensing medication to patients. The drop cups can either be placed on the dispenser tray as well or on a separate tray. Which tray is the right one depends primarily on the number of residents on a ward. To protect the contents, the nurse covers the tray with a stacking lid. This also has the advantage that another tray can be stacked on top – particularly useful when storing trays in the staff room.

The tray holds the dispenser with the medication rations for a full day. When the cup system is used, only the medication given with one meal is placed on a tray. The nurse prepares liquid medication in cups shortly before administration, optionally using a separate drop tray.
